Finishing & Preparing the Master Plug
for Mold Making
By the time you get to these final stages of Master Plug sculpting you will have gradually decreased the grit size of your cutting sand paper from #80 dry to #400 wet. You will begin to notice small pock marks, caused by air bubbles remaining in the sculpting block casting, called: “pin holes”. Reference #1. Do not attempt to patch them with Mold & Casting Compound Paste. There is a much easier way to fill them in the steps that follow.
If you closely compare the side silhouette of the sculpted Master Plug above to my original design drawing; you will see that I have made some slight changes to the Master Plug shape. I made the tail smaller. As the Master Plug began to take shape, it occurred to me that the less body material in this area; the easier it would be for the lure to wag its tail.
You are now in command of the knowledge it takes to sculpt any fishing lure size, shape or configuration you desire. Designing and making your own fishing lures is supposed to fun. So; don’t be afraid to experiment a little. Later courses will provide the means to efficiently, and cost effectively mass produce your final master plug designs.
The TRUEFLEX Imagineering TFI-2.5 Series (the Master Plug being used here for demonstration purposes) is a very successful and versatile fishing lure design. It seems the TFI-2.5 wants to swim like a fish no matter where, what kind, how many, or how big the hooks you hang on it. Add to that; the flexible and buoyant PVA material it will finally be constructed of. This lure can be made to mimic the behavior of just about any natural food source known to game fishing. Just ad different sizes and kinds of trailers to the tail hook eye.
(Graphic right) Is a small sampling of the line and hook harness configurations that can be applied to the TFI-2.5 Series. We must chose one now, in order to continue preparing the Master Plug for Mold Making. I have chosen a TFI 2.5-3 double hook set up, just to keep things simple for now.
