Counter Sinking Eye Sockets to Accept
3-D Eyes (Continued)
I have a theory about eyes on fishing lures. I might be totally off home plate with this, but here’s what I think: (Thinking like a hungry predator (game fish)).
I think that predator (Game Fish) home in on the eyes of their prey in order to strike, and eat their prey (head first). Therefore; as a lure designer; I think it is important to make the predator’s target easier to see, and hit. One way of making the lure more attractive to a predator is to make the eyes larger than life. The color of eyes are also important. Large red eyes on a small bait fish means the bait may be ill, or wounded. Again; an easy target for the predator. The predator has to spend less energy catching the food source if it is slow because of illness, or is wounded.
The color of fishing lures, and their eyes, have proven over and over, to be very significant in the difference between having a great fishing day, or being totally skunked.
Consider this eye to lure body size and color theory when deciding what size or color of eyes to put on your fishing lure design.
Another Predator (game fish) theory: Some game fish, such a Tuna are known tail bitters. It seams they like to wound their food on the first strike, then come back for the kill, and eat. We will get into this lure design theory later, in Book Three, Lure Making Unlimited.
Having all that said; no Marine Biologist has ever proven that fish are not totally color blind; which means fish can see only in scales of grey, or blue. After all; there is not a lot of light at ten feet, in a lake, or one-hundred feet, in an Ocean................?
39. It is OK to make diameter of cut slightly larger
than pencil out line. We will adjust the size and shape of the rough cut eye socket in the Following instructions. Fig. 31.
40. Per previous “small batch” mixing instructions; use pallet knife to fill the rough cut eye socket with M&CC. Fig. 32.
41. Apply paste mold release to 5/16” Dowel (preferably brass); center the dowel into the rough
cut eye socket, and hold at 90% to the plane of the Master Plug body until M&CC gels, or becomes hard enough to hold its shape. This should take only one to two minutes. Carefully remove dowel. Fig. 33.
42. After the eye socket shaping patch has cured (hardened) completely; use #400 wet sand paper, with water to remove patch over-spill material. Fig. 34.
