Jointed Fishing Lure configurations are limitless.
A jointed lure can be as simple as adding a Buck-tail skirt to a Pop-R, or, as with some more modern versions, designed so a very small dog can wag a very large tail.
Conventional jointed lures are most commonly nothing more than a stick bait lure body that has been cut in half, and joined together with a heng device connecting the two halves. This makes a lure that seems to have more of a swimming action, or an animal propelling itself forward with tail movement. However; This kind of jointed lure still depends on straight forward retrieve to activate it’s swimming behavior.
The TFI, Lipless Crankbait is designed to be a “swimming motor”; with or without a jointed trailer. And; with or without retrieve. Sounds hard to believe; doesen’t it.......
With the advent of soft plastic swim-tails such as the Gubb-tail, and crawdad (grapghic right); or a non-swimming, soft plastic, eel-tail; the components for the most life-like swimming animal are at hand. Just put the right colors together, and you have a live Waterdog (salamander), crawdad, or a baitfish replica that has the behavior of an animal propelling itself forward with tail force.
Since crankbaits depend on retrieve (forward motion) to activate their swimming behavior; they are ineffective at fishing virtical structures that hold fish.
